If any 'traditional' casino game can be said to have captured the imagination of the public more so than any other, certainly since the start of the 21st century, then that game without doubt is poker, and more specifically Texas Hold'em Poker.
This article begins with a look at the popular no limit Texas Hold'em Poker.
Originally, Poker was very much a casino game. Groups of players would visit the casinos of Las Vegas, for example, play against each other in cash table games and the casino would take a cut (known as a 'vig') of the percentage of bets each player made into each pot (usually around 5% though the actual figure would differ from casino to casino).
Indeed, up until the turn of the 21st Century, Poker was still very much a casino game, but by now, the game was quickly gaining an online following and two events brought it to the attention of the wider world. The first of these was the creation (and subsequent promotion) of the World Poker Tour and the boom in online poker gaming.
It was due to this and a vastly increased exposure in the mainstream media, that poker grew out of the casino and developed its own sites. Indeed, many casinos now only offer versions of Casino Hold'em (a similar game, but played against the casino, rather than other players) rather than the original game. There are some online casinos however that still do offer poker tables (usually cash games, rather than Sit & Go games)
There are also many providers that offer casino games alongside its choice of poker gaming.
So what is it about the game of Texas Hold'em that led it to become so popular as a game throughout the 21st Century, to the point where some of its stars, such as Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu, are now household names?
Let's explore a little more about the game to discover what lies at the heart of this universal appeal.
What is Texas Hold'em Poker?
The first thing to note is that the term "poker" can actually apply to many different types of game. This could be Omaha Poker, Omaha Hi-Lo, 5 or 7 Card Stud or Pot Limit Hold'em, but by far and away the most popular version is No Limit Texas Hold'em and it is this type of Poker that we shall focus on for this article.
Texas Hold'em is a version of the game made popular, as the name suggests, in the American deep south. It was developed with the prime goal of turning what could sometimes be very tight games of poker, where players infrequently bet, into a game where the movement of cash was more fluid.
It achieved this in two ways, firstly, by forcing two players at the table to place a bet into the pot before they receive their cards. These are the blinds, the small blind is paid by the player to the immediate left of the dealer and the large blind (2 x the small blind) is paid by the player immediately left of the person who paid the small blind.
To ensure fairness, the dealer button moves one space to the left around the table each hand, so that each player at the table pays a fair share of small and big blind bets.
Once the blinds are paid, each player then receives two cards from the dealer. These are the players hole cards and no other player at the table is aware of what your cards are. There then commences a round of betting where each player can elect to make one of several bets:
Once the first round of betting is complete, if there are players remaining in the hand, the dealer will then place three cards face up on the table. These are the first three community cards which all players remaining in the hand can use to make up a stronger hand, alongside their hole cards. This is called the 'flop'.
Another round of betting ensues after which the dealer will produce a fourth community card, called the 'turn'. Then another round of betting ensues. Finally, the fifth and final community card is revealed 'the river' and a final round of betting ensues.
If two or more players remain in the hand as the last betting hand concludes, the cards are revealed in a 'showdown' and the player with the highest value poker hand wins.
If at any point in the game, all but one players fold, the player who remains in the hand wins the pot.
After a hand is completed the dealer button moves one place to the left, the small and big blinds are paid by players and the next hand is dealt.
How do I play Texas Hold'em Poker?
Playing Texas Hold'em Poker is exceptionally easy. All you need to do to play at the most basic level is have an understanding of hand rankings and what constitutes a good hand. Once you have an understanding of hand rankings and the basic rules of the game, you can play.
However, it is extremely unlikely that you will become profitable playing the game at this point.
The reason for this is that unlike most casino games, which are predominantly games based on chance with a small level of skill, poker is a game that requires players to have a high level of skill and a deeper understanding of the mathematics and probabilities that come with playing the game.
Therefore, to begin to play Texas Hold'em Poker well, you need to start to understand what these key skills and strategies are. Some of the best poker sites will give you tutorials allowing you to learn about aspects of these games.
Psychology also plays a key role in the game as there is no compunction for any player to bet only when they have a strong hand and fold every time they have a weak hand. Players can 'lie', the preferred term in poker is 'bluff', by betting in a way which indicates they have a strong or weak hand when in truth they have the opposite.
This adds a huge amount to the game and means that understanding the strategic element of the game is vital if you are to achieve success. Understanding more complex gaming skills and strategies, such as being able to calculate all your outs at any given point in the game, what the pot odds are against implied odds and understanding betting patterns of your opponents, are what will turn you from a novice, into an accomplished player.
Tutorials can help but you can only really achieve this by taking part in games and playing for yourself, but it is always advisable to start at lower levels, by risking just a small proportion of your bankroll, so you don't lose all your money in a short space of time.
What are my chances of winning at Texas Hold'em Poker?
Many people think it is the cards you are dealt that determine if you'll win a hand at poker, but that is a fallacy; it is how you play the hand you are given that determines if you will win.
To do that successfully however, takes skill and a deeper understanding of the game. Players have to time when they make bluffs to make them plausible and do it too often and you'll soon find your bluff is called.
The more inexperienced your opponent, then the better your chances of success and it is fair to say luck does play a part at times, but winning regularly at Hold'em is down more to skill, than chance.
It is arguably this single factor which has made poker appeal to more people than any other casino game.
